I chuckled, a warm wave of familiarity washing over me. Lauren’s playful bedroom antics were a cherished part of our life, and I braced myself for whatever delightful surprise she had in store. But then her smile widened, and she dropped a bombshell that instantly chilled the room: ‘There’s going to be one more person joining us.’
Honestly, my immediate reaction was to assume she was joking.
Lauren had a knack for keeping me on my toes, often enjoying my frantic attempts to guess her next move. Sometimes it was a meticulously planned surprise dinner, other times an impromptu weekend getaway she’d orchestrated in secret, and occasionally, it was nothing more than a mischievous prank designed purely to make me sweat.
Yet, tonight, something felt undeniably different about her. Her usual playful glint was absent.
She wasn’t laughing.
“Another person?” I echoed, pushing myself up against the headboard, a knot forming in my stomach. “What on earth are you talking about?”
She turned away, slowly retying her robe, a sudden air of nervousness replacing her earlier confidence.
“Don’t be so dramatic,” she chided, her voice softer now. “I thought you trusted me implicitly.”
Beyond our bedroom window, the tranquil Ohio neighborhood unfolded in perfect, ordinary harmony. A familiar pickup truck rumbled past, the American flag on our neighbor’s porch fluttering gently, and somewhere down the street, a dog’s bark punctuated the evening quiet from behind a white picket fence.
But within the confines of our room, every semblance of normalcy had vanished.
“Trust has absolutely nothing to do with this,” I retorted, my voice firm despite the rising panic. “You just said someone else is joining us. Who is it, Lauren?”
Her gaze flickered towards the hallway.
That subtle movement sent a jolt of dread through me, tightening my stomach into a cold ball.
Someone was already inside our home.

I started to stand, but her hand immediately pressed against my chest, holding me gently but firmly in place.
“Please,” she whispered, her eyes pleading. “Just stay here for a moment and let me explain everything.”
“Then explain,” I demanded, my patience wearing thin.
Just then, her phone vibrated on the nightstand.
She glanced at the screen and quickly flipped it facedown, but not before my eyes caught the stark, unsettling notification.
I’m ready. Should I come in?
My gaze locked onto hers, demanding an answer.
Her confident smile, which had started this bizarre evening, finally faltered and disappeared completely.
“Lauren,” I said, my voice barely a whisper, laced with a cold edge. “Who did you invite into our home?”
A deafening silence stretched between us for several agonizing seconds.
Then, three soft, deliberate knocks echoed from the other side of our bedroom door.
Not the front door.
The bedroom door.
I moved instinctively, but Lauren quickly stepped between me and the barrier.
“You promised you wouldn’t get angry,” she said, her voice laced with desperation.
